Microsoft Edge has come a long way since the original version of the web browser made its debut alongside Windows 10 almost seven years ago. Last week, both Microsoft Edge 100 and Google Chrome 100 started rolling out, bringing pretty minor updates despite the change to a three-digit version string. Microsoft Edge isn’t going to beat Chrome anytime soon, though both browsers now share the same Chromium engine under the hood, and they’re also on the same 4-week release schedule. Google Chrome remains far ahead of the pack with a 67.29% desktop market share on Statcounter in March. Moreover, Microsoft Edge was already the second most popular desktop web browser according to Netmarketshare. Obviously, Microsoft Edge was poised to take second place as it comes preinstalled on Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it’s also available on macOS and Linux. In March, Microsoft Edge had 9.65% desktop marker share, up from 9.61% in February, while Apple’s Safari went from 9.77% to 9.56% in the same time frame. It’s stupid, because if it was a paid product, you essentially have to pay for a multitude of features you are never going to need, which in turn would inflate the price, in this case decreasing the performance.Microsoft Edge has now beaten Safari as the second most popular desktop web browser, according to Statcounter. If Microsoft weren’t so stupid, they would have done the same – ship a very lightweight and ultra fast browser and the first page people see when they open it for the first time is all the extra features (that are now bloatware) presented in a diagram with short explanations and a checkbox next to each, so people can check the boxes and these features get download as extensions from the Microsoft Extensions Store.

I’m talking about stripping everything, just allowing people to install extensions and this way people can use the extensions to get the features they need. I always wanted for someone to start building a browser based on Chromium, but strip away as much as possible, not as much as Ungoogled Chromium where you can’t even install extensions unless you perform some kind of a special operation first. When the program struggles, no matter how much power you throw at it, it won’t run any better. It’s the same like Vivaldi, except Vivaldi is worse because of the language they used to write the UI in, which makes all aspects of the browser really slow even on powerful computers.

I don’t know who are Microsoft trying to appeal with all this bloat in Edge.
